how do I install a software patch to an existing application?

I downloaded a rather large patch for a game FEAR that will not run on my Vista OS - locks up after minutes into game. I got the patch v1.03 from gamershell.com and now I cannot figure how to use it. Yes, it's pitiful that I could find it, download it, but now cannot install it. DUH.

1. you just double click the update patch and it finds the game and installs itself, unless you have a fixed exe already in the game directory, and you're using the game without the dvd, if this is so, you need the original exe back in the game dir before the update patch will detect it. and if you do all this and it works, you then neede a 1.03 no cd patch.
